International Autumn School Brought Students from Across Europe and the Middle East to Ostrava

The Faculty of Safety Engineering hosted its annual International Autumn School in Health, Safety and Environment, welcoming students from Belgium, Portugal, Poland, Finland, Kosovo, the United Arab Emirates, and the Czech Republic. The week-long programme was organized in cooperation with Stant Manufacturing.

The intensive week of team-based work was preceded by several online meetings, which are typical for short-term blended mobilities under the Erasmus+ programme.

Participants worked in international teams on real workplace safety projects, tackling topics such as risk communication and visualization, LOTO procedures, ergonomics, and psychosocial risks. The mixed teams were formed so that each group included representatives from the participating universities. Each team completed a project during the week, focusing on risk assessment and the proposal of specific measures. The practical part took place directly at Stant Manufacturing, where students were supported by experienced mentors from both the company and the Faculty of Safety Engineering.

“Practical collaboration with industry brings the programme to life. It’s inspiring to see students produce results that can genuinely improve workplace safety,” said Lucie Kocůrková, academic coordinator of the Autumn School. Stant’s HR & EHS Manager, Šárka Hermanová, added: “The assignments were challenging, but the students handled them brilliantly. Their ideas brought us valuable insights.”

The International School was organized by the Department of Occupational and Process Safety and involved students from AP University of Applied Sciences and Arts Antwerp, Instituto Politécnico do Porto, Poznań University of Technology, University of Oulu, Biznesi College Kosovo, and the University of Sharjah.

The event, held as part of the Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Program, combined online preparation with a week of on-site teamwork, intercultural learning, and social activities. Students not only gained new skills in occupational safety and risk management but also had the chance to explore Ostrava and experience international collaboration first-hand.

A big thank you goes to the organizing team, participating students and teachers, and Stant Manufacturing for creating a week full of learning, inspiration, and memorable experiences.
